About the album:

This album features music from my background in traditional Irish and Scottish fiddle styles, and highlights some newly composed music that nods to the traditional styles, including influence from classical chamber music and American music. Mostly instrumentals and a couple songs, the album features many friends: Owen Marshall, Conor Hearn, Neil Pearlman, Eamon Sefton, Rasa String Quartet, Sarah Collins, Kat Wallace, Steven Manwaring, and Elias Alexander. 

The album was recorded in by Eli Crews at Spillway Sounds, Dan Cardinal at Dimension Sound Studios. It was mixed by Dave Sinko and mastered by David Glasser. Photography and design by Louise Bichan. It was released in May 2023.

Violinist Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn unite to form “Rakish.” The duo explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for chamber and improvised music. Rakish has performed for Front Row Boston, Brian O’Donovan’s “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn,” and they can be heard on broadcasts of GBH’s “A Celtic Sojourn.” They have appeared at festivals including the Boston Celtic Music Festival, the Bellingham Irish Music Festival, and the Rockport Celtic Music Festival. Rakish is a recipient of the 2019 Iguana Fund Grant generously supported by Club Passim.

RASA string Quartet

2020 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition Winner

Rasa String Quartet was formed in 2019 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA and consists of Maura Shawn Scanlin, Kiyoshi Hayashi, Emma Powell and Mina Kim. The Rasa String Quartet is quickly emerging as one of New England’s finest young classical ensembles. In April 2020, they won 1st prize in the Chamber Music Yellow Springs 35th Annual Competition, and were recently selected as finalists for the 2020 Lakes Area Music Festival String Quartet Residency. The quartet seeks to program diverse music, performing Classical masterworks alongside arrangements of traditional folk and contemporary tunes.
